An innocent child is caught in an obsessive tug-of-love between warring mothers in this highly charged French psychological thriller. Catherine Frot (The Page Turner) plays a divorced woman going through a child-custody battle who stops in her tracks when collecting her son from a children's party, clearly feeling an unspoken connection with a certain little girl in a fairy costume. It's not long before the child's mother (Sandrine Bonnaire) is aware of the other woman's unnerving attentions, and from there Safy Nebbou's film is permeated by tension as the confrontation between the two mums acquires a steely edge. Frot delivers a performance that inspires chills and sympathy, and is matched by Bonnaire's assured turn as the privileged housewife with something to hide. And although the plot struggles to remain convincing throughout, the whole approach displays a Gallic subtlety far removed from Hollywood shockers such as The Hand That Rocks the Cradle.
