Super-suave George Sanders stepped into the shoes of Simon Templar (vacated by Louis Hayward) for this sprightly mystery, based on Leslie Charteris's novel Angels of Doom. Here, Sanders takes on the San Francisco underworld in order to prove the innocence of Wendy Barrie's policeman father. Jonathan Hale also joins the series in the recurring role of Inspector Fernack, who starts every case by putting Templar at the top of the list of suspects. Briskly directed by John Farrow (father of Mia), the film boasts atmospheric sets by Van Nest Polglase, who designed the Astaire/Rogers musicals as well as Citizen Kane.
