Taking a popular conspiracy theory a stage further - did the Americans really land on the Moon, or did they fake it in a TV studio? - this ingenious thriller sees three men bound for Mars, until there's a technical hitch on the launch pad. The astronauts end up faking the mission to save face, but their space capsule (which went without them) burns up on re-entry. Problem one: three embarrassingly alive astronauts. Problem two: their distraught families. Problem three: Elliott Gould as a nosey reporter. Directed by Peter Hyams with real flair, this is hugely enjoyable, all the way to the gripping finale in which Telly Savalas relishes his fun role as an old-time crop-dusting pilot who's got the right stuff.
