SINOPSIS
In this tough crime drama, Robert Mitchum plays an honest cop who goes up against a gangster (Robert Ryan) who has leading politicians in his pocket. Despite being made by RKO for peanuts, the film has some decent action scenes and car chases, and co-directors John Cromwell and Nicholas Ray lace the rather hackneyed story with a welcome dash of political cynicism. RKO was owned at the time by Howard Hughes and this is a remake of a 1928 film that Hughes produced.
