SINOPSIS

Jazz trumpeter Chet Baker became famous in the 1950s following collaborations with Stan Getz and bebop giant Charlie Parker that highlighted his edgy playing style. Good-looking and also blessed with a fine singing voice, Baker went on to become the leading exponent of the West Coast "cool school" of jazz. Following Baker's mid-career decline through drug abuse, Elvis Costello temporarily revived the trumpeter's fortunes when he employed him for a solo on his 1983 hit Shipbuilding. But drugs eventually contributed to Baker's demise - he died after falling from an Amsterdam hotel window in 1988. In this elegant documentary about the wayward musician from fashion photographer Bruce Weber, the tragic aspects of Baker's life are revealed in interviews with other musicians and some of his lovers, complemented by terrific sessions involving the man described by many as the "James Dean of jazz".
