James Bond is dead! Long live Nicolas Whistler - or at least that's what this spy spoof would have us believe. Everything here is just on the unfunny side of clever; for instance, the American title Agent 8 is a reference both to Federico Fellini's 81/2, released earlier the same year, and the fact that this was the eighth collaboration between director Ralph Thomas and Dirk Bogarde. Cheerfully sending up his own Rank image as much as that of Bond, Bogarde is merely adequate, for the real star of the show is Robert Morley as the spymaster who equates espionage with the Eton wall game.
