As Billie Dawn, mistress to Broderick Crawford's junk trader-made-good, Judy Holliday affects a voice that could curdle cream and a persona that will melt your heart. It's a measure of her performance that she beat both Bette Davis for All about Eve and Gloria Swanson for Sunset Blvd to the best actress Oscar. Garson Kanin's dialogue is acid on toast, and director George Cukor cleverly knows when to let the action play in splendid long takes: the gin rummy scene is cinematic perfection. As the nice guy in the plot, William Holden demonstrates the subtle charm that would swiftly make him a movie legend.
