Returning from a dangerous Royal Navy mission on the Falklands, Lord Harry Pendoran's son, lieutenant Rupert Pendoran, takes pity on Diana, heiress of his family's arch-rival Gerald Vermontsley, who expects the child of her ex, Rupert's Navy friend Bill Graves, so he allows her to pretend he's the father, even after finding out her sister, his ex, once had an abortion while he was overseas. Rivalry among the fathers over over the office of high sheriff and fox hunt, crucial for Gerald to land a vital American contract.
