Playing an undergraduate at the age of 41, Fred Astaire considered this the worst film he ever made. But an off-form Fred is still worth watching, even though his dancing style is undeniably cramped by Paulette Goddard, who is the subject of his romantic rivalry with Burgess Meredith. Off-screen, Goddard (who was then Mrs Charlie Chaplin) was seeing quite a lot of Meredith, whom she married in 1942. Artie Shaw earned an Oscar nomination for best score and shared another with Johnny Mercer for the song Love of My Life. And before you ask, Astaire and Meredith didn't blow their own trumpets.
