„Die schönste Serie, die es zur Zeit im Fernsehen gibt“, befand der „Spiegel“, als am 1. Juni 1994 im Nachtprogramm des Bayerischen Fernsehens die „Space Night“ das erste Mal auf Sendung ging. Und gar als „Erlösung vom Fernsehen“ empfand die Süddeutsche Zeitung die Originalaufnahmen aus dem Weltall, die das Testbild des BR mit Material von der NASA, der ESA und dem Deutschen Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt ablösten. Schlaflose, Einsame und spät heimgekehrte Nachtschwärmer wurden zum treuen Publikum des von Andreas Bönte und Georg Scheller ins Leben gerufenen Trost- und Chill out-Programms nach Mitternacht. „Space Night“ wurde mit Wissenschafts- und Fernsehpreisen für seine spektakulären Bilder aus dem Erdorbit, von Astronauten und Flügen durch die Weiten des Alls ausgezeichnet.
